Senior Dog Senility - Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS)

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome is also commonly referred to as "dog senility" or "old dog" syndrome.

Some symptoms to look for are:

  • Reduced or non responsiveness to commands/apparent deafness
  • Lack of interest in surroundings/events
  • Confusion/disorientation
  • Reduced activity
  • Increased sleeping
  • Inability to recognize friends and family members and other family pets
  • Increased thirst
  • Excessive panting
  • Difficulty eating and/or reduced interest in food
  • Loss of bladder and bowel control
  • Difficulty navigating the environment (furniture)

Here is a good site from Pfizer that discusses dog senility in more detail and also has information about their drug Anipryl which is often prescribed for cognitive dysfunction syndrome in dogs.
