Dog Insurance FAQ's

1. How does dog insurance work?

Dog insurance plans work very much like insurance plans for humans.  The majority covers accidents and/or illness, and some have preventive medicine options available too.

All of them have deductible and exclusions due to pre-existing or breed-common conditions.

In this case, you should also read the fine print, because like human insurance companies, most cover just what they consider suitable, less deductible and co-pay.  This means, your refund could be a lot smaller than you think.

2. First I pay, and afterwards I get a refund?

Normally, you will pay the bill at the vet’s office and later will get the refund from your dog insurance company.

Ensure you understand the process and learn how simple, or complicated, it will be to claim your money back, as well as the average time it will take for them to give you the refund check.

3. Can I use any vet or providers’ network?

Normally, you can choose any vet you like; however, if the insurance company works with certain doctors, and only accepts claims from them, make sure yours is in the list.

4. How large is the deductible?

The higher the deductible, the lower your monthly premiums will be, and vice versa.  Also, verify if there is a limited number of claims or visits you can present in a year or over the life of the policy.

If your dog likes eating interesting items, be aware that some companies will only accept one surgical removal procedure per year.  Equally, some old dogs get ill very often and may require regular attention due to their condition, increasing considerably the yearly amount of visits to the vet.

5. Does the insurance plan end when my dog gets to a certain age?

A lot of policies are created only for young and healthy dogs; thus, you may have to get one for old dogs once your pal reaches that stage.

6. When does coverage begin?

Most plans have a waiting period for specific conditions, and the amount of time depends on this condition.

7. Does the coverage have a limit?

The limit can be low, only a few thousand dollars per year, or high, tens of thousands of dollars; thus, make sure you know before signing.

8. For how long is the policy valid?

Dog policies are short-term, most are a year long, and can be renewed with the company’s approval.

A good company will not count as pre-existing conditions the illnesses that were treated during the previous coverage time; however, ask them.

9. Is dog insurance right for me?

It works for some people and doesn’t work for others.  Think about your dog’s special needs, its age and if it has chronic conditions, and also consider your finances.

A plan for full coverage will cost more than one specific for accidents, and never underestimate the value of preventive care coverage.

Make a list of what you need covered under the plan and how much you can pay, and only then, go looking for the best dog insurance company.
