Do Your Own Research When Considering Prescription Pet Medication

There will inevitably be a time in most pet owners lives that they will be in need of providing prescription medication to their pet. There are many pet medications available for the various medical conditions that exist and your veternarian will assist you in determining what medicine is best for your pet. With that said it’s still very important that you do your own research as the manufacturers will never go out of their way to say here are some issues we are aware of. The manufactures do provide information about some widely known side effects but in many instances there can be other lesser known side effects that you will learn about through independent research that could affect or be affecting your pet.

The pet industry is unfortunately not regulated enough as the human prescription drug environment but I’m hopeful it will one day change. Also some breeds and sizes are sometimes affected more than others depending on the drug but most of the time you just really need to do your research to find out this information. The internet can provide a wealth of knowledge but you need to be sure it’s coming from reputable sources. One thing I have learned is never just listen to your veternarian without double checking or getting a second opinion. Also there are mistakes sometimes made. For example we were once provided a brain drug when we needed a drug for the heart. The medication was very similar in name but I went home did research and realized there was a mistake. So always do your own research even when using a veterinarian you may trust.
