Articles > HealthStay Overnight With Your Hospitalized Pet Hospitalized dogs recover faster when human family members are nearby providing them with love and comfort. That’s why Diane Levitan, VMD, had seven rooms built inside The Center for Specialized Veterinary Care in Westbury, NY, so owners can stay overnight (or even longer) with their animals. “We know that by people being with their pet it makes them happier and it makes the animals happier,” she says. The Long Island emergency care and referral hospital opened in 2003, and is the first facility in the country to offer owners a place to stay with their sick pets. Each private room includes a thick mat for animals, portable cage, oxygen source, sink, and loveseat. There’s also a workstation with internet hookup. A shared kitchen and bathroom are available. And a central nurse’s station staffed around the clock keeps a close eye on each patient. While there, owners can help with treatment, such as administering medications or monitoring equipment. “A lot of people are a little bit ashamed about how much they love their pets,” says Levitan, a board certified specialist in small animal internal medicine. “(But) it’s OK to love your pet and respect your pet that much that you want to be there with him.” ~ Staff, SeniorDogs.com If you would like to include this article on your site please include the following information with the article:
